چکیده

A conceptual data model is a critical key factor to achieve the goal of a database being designed. The requirements of today’s statistical database applications call for powerful modeling techniques. There are a number of data modeling problems that cannot be solved by using existing statistical data models. This paper proposes conceptual data modeling techniques to meet the requirements of a large shared statistical database application. An object-oriented statistical data model (OOSDM) is constructed using object-oriented concepts. The OOSDM represents statistical data in different levels of abstraction which enhances the semantic richness and theion which enhances the semantic richness and the extensibility of the conceptual model. The extensibility is achieved through an inheritance mechanism. ‘Ihe semantic richness shows that the model is extensible in a manageable way without damaging the semantics of the model.

On Uncertain Probabilistic Data Modeling

Uncertainty in data is caused by various reasons including data itself, data mapping, and data policy. For data itself, data are uncertain because of various reasons. For example, data from a sensor network, Internet of Things or Radio Frequency Identification is often inaccurate and uncertain because of devices or environmental factors. For data mapping, integrated data from various heterogono...

Facilitating Integration of Distributed Statistical Databases Using Metadata and XML

In a distributed statistical database environment, data selection and actual statistical computation can be carried out at local databases, while data integration can bring together data produced from diverse sources, at different levels of details to produce statistical summaries. For example, the amount of beef retailed in European countries may be held in different local consumer databases a...

Visualising Data Modelling Constructs in an Object-oriented Database

Object-oriented databases are seen as potential successors to rela-tional databases, at least in part because they provide a richer set of data modelling constructs. This paper addresses the challenge to interface designers posed by such constructs to support data browsing and modelling through powerful and perspicuous visualisations, with the additional requirement that the visualisations shou...

An extensible web interface for databases and its application to storing biochemical data

This paper presents a generic web-based database interface implemented in Prolog. We discuss the advantages of the implementation platform and demonstrate the system’s applicability in providing access to integrated biochemical data. Our system exploits two libraries of SWI-Prolog to create a schema-transparent interface within a relational setting. As is expected in declarative programming, th...

Design and Representation of Multidimensional Models with UML and XML Technologies

Data warehouses (DW), multidimensional databases (MDB), and OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) applications are based on the Multidimensional (MD) modeling. Most of these applications provide their own MD models to represent main MD properties, thereby making the design totally dependent of the target commercial application. In this chapter, we present how the Unified Modeling Language (UML) c...
